A gold – medalist from Khalsa college, he is well learned and articulate unlike his wife Guneeta Kaur, who hates reading or writing. He is a patriarch and Chandni is his source of his strength. He thinks that most of the men in the house are incompetent especially Sameer, whose irresponsible behaviour drives him up the wall. Furthermore, Girish’s over pampering Sameer infuriates him further.

He has very simple guiding principles in his life - ‘never count money that has gone, instead count what you have’ and ‘taking loan is a sin – never borrow money and statuses.’ and his three sacred laws are:

 Alcohol is a social necessity, not a sport
 Loans are evil – never borrow money, things or status
 It it’s a chawla, it belongs with us

Guneeta Ramlal Chawla played by Joyshri Arora

Lalaji’s wife and life, Guneeta is someone Ramlal meets in the refugee camp during the partition. The bond they share is forged under strife but it’s a bond of love so strong that it doesn’t require expression. The mother figure in the house and of the family, Guneeta isn’t your typical self sacrificing, quiet, simpering woman. She plays a very critical role in most of the decision making in the house as all the family members including Lalaji value her judgment.

She’s a lady with spunk and someone who is the perfect match for her husband – albeit entirely opposite in temperament, likes and dislikes. Unlike Ramlal, who is well educated, guneeta is illiterate. But she has a penchant for news. Therefore, every morning her husband Ramlal reads out the newspaper to her. Both husband and wife thrive on pulling each other’s leg and boast of the most alive equation. Guneeta has a solution to the most complex problems and that saves the day for her family when in difficulty. She believes that harmony and optimism is the key to happiness in the family.

Girish Ramlal Chawla

Girish is eldest son of Roshan and Guneeta Chawla. Girish handles the money affairs of the sweet meat business of the Ramlals. Although mechanical in the way he deals with life, Girish is large hearted, noble and has a great business sense. He has deep respect for Lalaji and shares a very strong bond with him.

Manohar Ramlal Chawla

Manohar is the second son of Roshan Ramlal Chawla. He is a doting father and a loving husband who likes pampering his wife even after several years of marriage. Due to poor health, he has difficulty walking. He is completely dependent on Girish for decisions and gets very flustered when asked to take a decision independently on business and family.
Another drawback Manohar has is that he can be easily influenced. It is because of this drawback he is always taken for a ride by the younger members of the Chawla family. His wife always pesters him to take charge as she wants him to lead the business being the eldest son of Roshan Ramlal Chawla.

Shashi Ramlal Chawla

Shashi Chawla is a smart and impressive woman. She is very authoritative and demands the best from her husband as well as her children. Though she is rigid and opinionated, she is genuinely good at heart. Her obsession with cleanliness is always the point of discussion amongst the family members. Two key things that bother Shashi immensely are firstly that she isn’t being given the entire household responsibility anymore and secondly her husband, Manohar isn’t considered good enough to shoulder the responsibilities of the business
